MHS vs SF Christian: Bulldogs are State A bound!
Great game tonight at the Elmen Center. Madison fans filled one side and spilled over to the ends. Unless you arrived early, it was a long walk from the car.
More pictures tomorrow and in the Madison Daily Leader. Buy a copy on Wednesday.
ORR vs Colman-Egan: DVC Boys Basketball
The C-E Hawks defeated the ORR boys in the first round of the DVC tournament. Here are a few images from the game.
ORR vs Dell Rapids St Mary: Girls Basketball
Last week’s DVC games were moved around due to the weather so the ORR girls found themselves playing under the funky yellow lights of the Arena in Estelline. The yellow lighting messed with your eyes and the camera didn’t care for it much either. It wasn’t the prettiest game but the Lady Raiders came away with the win.
ORR at Estelline: Girls Basketball
The Lady Raiders were in this one until the end when they fell short in the final minutes.
ORR at Colman-Egan: Girls’ Basketball
Time to catch up on posting some basketball images! The Lady Raiders won in Colman.
REVENGE! Colman-Egan vs ORR at DVC
The Colman-Egan CE-Hawks took away a win tonight in DVC action at the Colman gym. Foul trouble plagued the Raiders. Two of their dominate players found themselves sitting on the bench with four fouls each. Alex Waba ended his game in the second half while Blake Menor had to be careful not to add a final foul to his night. The game was back and forth until the last seconds of the game when Colman-Eagan took the lead and held on for the victory.
In first half action senior Dylan Reaves (20) goes to the basket surrounded by Alex Waba (22), Logan DeRungs and Austin Jensen. This is the one for tomorrow’s Madison paper.
Check back on Tuesday for more images from tonight’s game and Saturday games against Estelline.
ORR Raiders at Colman-Egan – Boys Basketball
The Raiders pulled off a convincing victory over the C-E Hawks in Colman on Friday night. We like BIG pictures. Here are a few for you to enjoy from the game.
Relax Coach, you’re ahead!
ORR Raider Basketball Coach Larry Malcomb really gets into the games. He has a hard time relaxing even with a comfortable lead. Here’s a few of his expressions from the ORR at Colman-Egan game from Friday night.
ORR vs FIS Girls Basketball
It was a blowout as the FIS girls came to Rutland to face the Lady Raiders.
Double Overtime! ORR vs Elkton Boys Basketball
Elkton came to Rutland confident in their abilities. Coach Malcomb had another plan. Seniors dominated the Elkton roster. Their size, speed and experience seemed to seal the Raiders’ fate before the jump ball. The ORR crowd was pleasantly surprised starting right away in the first quarter as the Raiders opened up a lead on Elkton. The score was close the entire game with ORR ahead for most of it. Coach Malcomb’s stress grew towards the end of the game. Regulation time ended with the score tied. It came down to free throws. The Raiders couldn’t seal the win. The game continued to a second OT. The crowd held their breath as the fouls added up and then erupted into celebration as the final buzzer blew.
ORR Girls’ Basketball: Chelsea
What can we say about Chelsea? There is fire in those eyes.
Raiders at Canistota
I’ve spent some time in Canistota working with Matt and Wendell Anderson at the Canistota Clipper newspaper office. We’ve also photographed several Canistota seniors. We like Canistota – it’s just like home. Now I’ve known Matt and Wendell for years and years back from when I worked at the Madison Daily Leader where Matt and Wendell printed their newspapers. As the transition to digital photography came about I helped set up computer systems and troubleshoot problems at the Clipper office. On occasion I have covered events when Matt was busy. Saturday was one of those days. Because of the holiday, the Madison Daily Leader already had all of the ORR sports images it had room for so I concentrated on Saturday afternoon’s game on the Canistota players. I haven’t seen the Canistota paper yet so I don’t know which images were used so I thought I’d put a few on the blog for you to enjoy.
What about Mike?
Some people just grow on you and you’re not really sure why. Mike is in our son’s Dacey’s class in Rutland. What Mike lacks in size, he makes up for in participation and attitude. He is always out there trying his best especially in basketball. Mike plays on the JV team which doesn’t always get recognition in the local newspapers. Here are a few images of Mike at the Canistota game last Saturday.
Entringer Scholarship Classic: ORR vs Castlewood
On New Year’s Eve, scheduling for the Entringer Scholarship Classic had the Chester vs Madison and ORR vs Castlewood games starting at about the same time. We photograph many seniors from both Madison and Chester and ElizaBeth and I are MHS alumni so I stayed most of the time in the main gym and then walked across the hall into the auxiliary gym to see how the Raiders were doing against Castlewood. I wasn’t the only one going back and forth between the two gyms.
Here’s a few from the ORR/Castlewood game.
More from the Swiftel Classic: ORR vs Summit
A few more images from the Swiftel Classic in Brookings.
More Madison vs Chester Boys Basketball
We are in the middle of a tidal wave of basketball. Here are a few more images from Chester vs. Madison in the Entringer Scholarship Classic.
This is intensity!
The Entringer Scholarship Classic is held at the Brookings High School every Christmas break. What a great way to spend New Year’s Eve! In the auxiliary gym, the ORR Raiders played while in the main gym, Chester and Madison faced off against each other. While the contract photographers shot from under the basket, I opted to hang out on the corner of the floor. As Mitchell White went up for this shot showing the same intensity as his brother had last year, he drew a foul from a Chester player.
Going through all of the images of last night for the paper, this is the best one I’ve found so far. Check back tomorrow to see more images.
Swiftel Classic: ORR Raiders vs Summit Eagles
Here’s a happy accident that you rarely see: the flash from the contract photographer’s strobes went off the same time I pushed the button. Cool effect. I almost always shoot basketball with available light, but his time we will take the additional lighting help.
Logan always has the best facial expressions when he takes a shot. The ORR Raiders were well on their way to victory over the Summit Eagles by this second half shot.
Our family loves basketball. Dacey is an ORR cheerleader and Rachel is a future Lady Raider. Love can be very expensive though. Dacey got in for free. I had to fork out $10 to get Rachel and myself through the gate. Of course the kids did not eat before we left home so their hands were out for cash to buy something to stifle their rumbling stomachs and satisfy their thirst. The concession stand was plenty spendy and the kids kept coming back for more dollars. You would think that all of that money would fix their hunger. After the game was won, Dacey delared his continued intense over and over again all the way home. I came with $50 and left with less than $10.
South Dakota Sports Photography: ORR vs Hamlin at the Swiftel Classic
Today’s adventure took us to Brookings. Rachel and I hopped in the van and went up the interstate to the Swiftel Center where the ORR girls’ basketball team played Hamlin in the Swiftel Classic. Here are a few images from the game. Check out Tuesday’s Madsion Daily Leader for more.
Logan seemed to be everywhere on the floor.
Chelsea directed traffic for ORR. We’ve taken more pictures of Chelsea driving down the floor with the ball than any other player over the past few years. Wherever the action is Chelsea will be in the middle of it.
Carly’s speed works to her advantage on the basketball floor.
The game was very close at the end. It looked as if ORR would sqeak out a victory with a one point lead. A couple of free throws later, Hamlin took the lead with only seconds left on the clock. Chelsea’s dad Larry and I watched the game from the end of the court. Ever the coach, Larry was up and down as the seconds turned down. It looked as if the game was lost. The ball was thrown in, passed quickly to Bree way outside the three point line. Bree caught the ball, turned and then shot the ball in one motion. As the ball left her fingertips the buzzer went off and the red light came on signifying the end of the game. The crowd went wild in stunned disbelief as the ball fell from the net. Bree and the team celebrated the perfect ending with hugs. THis was one of those times, I got caught up in the excitement of the game and forgot the camera. So no I did not get the shot…but it was a great ending just the same.
Happy belated birthday to Lisa
Lisa, our trainer at the community center, is a target and pretty good sport for all of the teasing we give her. Her goal in life is to work us hard enough that we are totally spent without causing us injuries. In the last year, Lisa has done a great job of motivating us. As ElizaBeth and I have gotten into better shape, we don’t feel soreness the next day as we once did. That means Lisa is doing something right. We spend many hours in front of the computer and that lack of movement is unhealthy. As we get older, the body doesn’t respond the way we want it to. It’s not easy to turn back time, but we can make slow consistent gains as long as we stick with the program. Having a trainer push you to the next level gives us the greatest returns for the time spent. It also means that we have someone to hold us accountable.
It was Lisa’s birthday a few weeks ago and we gave her a picture as a present. During the halftime of the DSU Homecoming FB game, Lisa and some of her friends were involved in a powderpuff flag FB game of their own. Here is the composite of some of the fun.
On the road
Today we headed south of Hurley to Todd Buckstead’s studio for a training session on our new album creation software. Todd has a very cool studio in a barn. Everything inside is very nice. It’s very cool to see an old building repurposed instead of tore down.
After going 80 miles south in the morning, we headed the opposite direction in the late afternoon. We gave a program at the Southwest Minnesota Photographers Guild in Marshall. We spoke on senior marketing. It’s always fun to share with other photographers.
Caitlinn
It was yet another busy day in the studio this saturday. Babies and kids in the morning and Caitlinn’s senior session in the afternoon.
The sun may be shining and the thermometer may be creeping higher, but it is still a bit brisk when we were taking outside pictures…and bright too.
If you follow Madison Lady Bulldog basketball, you have already seen Caitlynn in action. Notice the very cool warm up pants.
Season is over
Arlington ended the ORR Lady Raiders season last night. It was a 2 point game with 2 minutes left. Arlington pulled away in the final moments of the game. The Lady Raiders never gave up.
South Dakota Sports Photography: More basketball!
Another home game in Rutland last night. It was a full house at the Rutland Gym as ORR took on Dell Rapids St. Mary’s.
Here’s a preview of what will probably be in the local paper come monday of one of our seniors. Chris (#41) loves basketball. His brother Cody is an assistant coach for the Raiders.
South Dakota Sports Photography: ORR Girls Basketball
Photography is a hobby for us as well. Whenever there is a home game at the Rutland Gym, we try to get over and have some fun taking sports pictures.
Lighting in small gyms and 9 man football fields is sometimes like shooting in a cave. It’s part of the challenge to adjust to the situation and still get the great shot. For basketball, we want to ball at the end of the fingertips, feet off the ground and a great expression.
Go, Rob, Go!
On most Friday nights, you will find us at a football game. We cover local sports for the newspaper just for the fun of it. If we get a chance to photograph some of our seniors in action, we include those action shots into their senior albums.
We also print up our best sports shots into big poster prints. Parents just love being able to have one or two really good prints to remember their son’s or daughter’s athletic career….The kids love it even more.
Nine-man football fields are notoriously dark. We use big lenses designed especially for low-light, but we are still limited to the first half. As darkness falls, we use slower shutter speeds and pan the camera with the action. If we are lucky, we can keep the players face tack sharp with lots of motion blur as in this image of Rob, one of our seniors from Rutland.
Just to show you a little closer view of Rob, I zoomed in to show all of the detail you can’t see in the image above.
Football gives lots of opportunites for great pictures, BUT it also can be dangerous: When you are out on the sidelines, you can suffer grievous injury if you do not pay attention to your surroundings. You always have to be aware of people around you at the start of a play. When the offense runs a sweep, the sidelines are where the play will end – usually where my feet were standing 5 seconds before. Braxton almost got me twice tonight.
