Rutland Graduation

05 16 10 QRS 6493 Rutland Graduation

Rutland’s Class of 2010 graduated on Saturday. We gotten to know all of the kids over the years. Some we’ve know almost all of their lives. The gym was FULL at 2 in the afternoon. It was too wet for fieldwork with warm temps, hazy overcast and for once at graduation NO WIND! With all of the small schools in the area having commencement ceremonies on the same day, the Madison Daily Leader, asked if I would take a few pictures.

Megan Powell wrote a song for her senior project. Amber Misar performed it for the graduates before they received their diplomas. Here is a video that we put together with the images from yesterday accompanied by Amber Misar singing Megan’s song. Bill Shoup played the various instruments in the song.

Aliya at 2 years old

05 14 10 aliyamag Aliya at 2 years old

Aliya is a beautiful baby girl, but she really isn’t a baby any more.

Most 2 yr olds can get their parents to understand them through pointing and single word commands like “juice”.

Aliya uses complete sentences. She says “please” and “thank you”. Aliya is a thoughtful soul full of smiles. Spend enough time with Aliya and you forget that most 2 year olds are into everything and anything all the time followed by parents just trying to keep up.

The top image is Aliya’s Birthday Club magnet. The bottom two images are her 4×10 panels.

Sneak Peak: Shannon and Makayla’s Playtime Session

05 10 10 QRS 2632 1 Sneak Peak: Shannon and Makaylas Playtime Session

ElizaBeth and I are getting all those last minute things wrapped up before seniors start graduating this Saturday.

Shannon and Makayla had a fun Playtime Session. We had beautiful skies and light wind. Here are just a couple to tease you with until we get the rest ready.

We are getting more and more calls for senior pictures this year. We still have plenty of openings left. Everyone seems to want August and September. Scheduling your senior session earlier in the summer has many advantages: we have more time to play, there are no conflicts with sports practices and the grass is greener while the lake is not.

Lori and Mike

05 09 10 QRS 5904 Lori and Mike

We should all aspire to be more like Lori and Mike Waldner. The are always there for their kids. This last Saturday, they were out working at the track meet at Trojan Field. I watched Lori cheer her son on as he approached the finish line in one of the heats of the boys 400 meter race.

Mike and Lori are in maybe the best shape of their lives. Lori quit aging 15 years ago and is training for a marathon. Mike is into triathlons and is training for a HIM this Fall.

They are always upbeat about life and willing to give you a helping hand or cheer you on to the finish line.

DSU Graduation

05 09 10 DSU Graduation DSU Graduation

I covered DSU Graduation on Saturday morning for the Madison Daily Leader. It was interesting to watch the photographers hired by DSU walk right in front of the podium in front of everyone. I could get the same shot with the big lens from the back. I wanted to help the gal taking pictures in front of the bright yellow backdrop. Flashes on brackets are used to keep the flash over the axis of the lens. She had the backet on backwards and didn’t bother to use the capabilities of the backet to flip the flash over the lens. She turned the camera vertical and had the flash off to the side which ends up giving you a march harsher side shadow. I wonder how their pictures will turn out.

Check out Moday’s Madison Daily Leader for more pictures. We did get pictures of all of the graduates getting their diplomas along with a few fun shots afterwards.

Sara turns 2 years old

05 08 10 Sara Sara turns 2 years old

Sara is 2 years old. How cool is that! Mom brought Sara from Sioux Falls for her birthday pictures.

Our studio is perfect for the little ones. We have toys, very few rules, plenty of time and of course, the snack bucket. There is no line to stand in. You don’t feel you are being herded through like cattle. Pictures should be FUN!

We have this thing called the “Birthday Club”. You get a FREE session for your child’s birthday. The session doesn’t have to be on the birthday, just close: within a week or two.

We had so much fun with Sara that we put a few up on our slideshow site. Sara’s slideshow

ORR Sports Posters

05 06 10 Sports Posters ORR Sports Posters

The ORR Sports Banquet was held this last Monday in Ramona. We always bring some sports posters of the best shots of the sports seasons. This year we included a few composites. As usual, time constraints and too many great images limited the number of posters produced this year. We have several on order right now to finish up. If your son or daughter wasn’t featured on one of the posters, we can still create one for you. Just call us at the studio.

Drive your tractor to school day…

05 05 10 QRS 5478 Drive your tractor to school day...

Only in Rutland…

Yesterday was “Drive Your Tractor to School Day” for the Rutland FFA students. FFA week falls in February and it was way too cold to bring out the tractors this Winter.

It’s windy out there!

05 05 10 QRS 5543 Its windy out there!

After a nice warm spell, we are not getting our share of blustery days. It spits. It blows. It’s cold out there. Not great for outside pictures.

This morning ElizaBeth called me on the way home about some bad wind erosion in a field northeast of Madison. I grabbed the camera and took a few shots for the Madison paper. Right when I pulled up in the car, it was much worse than this. I had to turn the car around so I could open the door safely. By that time the dust had settled down from what it had been.

Lisa is graduating!

05 04 10 Lisa Lisa is graduating!

Our trainer Lisa is graduating from Dakota State on Saturday.

We’ve been working with Lisa for more than a year now. She is the reason that we can photograph a wedding and still feel fresh at the end of the day.

We always give Lisa a bad time, but she can take it and dish it out too.

Congratulations Lisa!

Back to the pool with Jason

ElizaBeth and I have debated attending Jason’s Monday night swim class for months. Tonight we threw caution to the wind, got rid of the “I can’ts”, sucked it up and got in the van for the trip to the Community Center.

Jason tells me that he can improve my swimming style by making me more efficient. Right now, I am up to “not drowning” in my skill level. I can cruise one lap of the pool and then gravity takes over. The arms grow tired, the feet sink and I gasp for air. I wonder how long it will take for those drills to make swimming easy.

I was expecting pain. I was pleasantly surprised. Jason isn’t known for easy workouts. The hour flew by. There might just be hope for me yet. I’m still not a big fan of water. I’d rather be at a wedding doing photography with my beautiful wife ElizaBeth, but it’s time to toughen up (again) and get into better shape.
